As far as how he is, he actually has a lot of dark thoughts floating about in his head, because well, he is a latent criminal. Most of it is worrying about young kids and wanting there to be more adults worrying about them in the CDC. But he also gets a little depressed about thinking about being a parent. He's hiding the fact that he has a son, and about how much suffering that he has gone through because he is a latent criminal. He's hiding that thanks to the CDC, he's no longer an alcoholic. Lots of little things that he will brush under the rug because the most important thing is watching out for those who are in need -- that's what he became a detective for and that's why he allowed himself to become nothing more than a hunting dog.
